Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, and major contact lens manufacturer Menicon will begin joint research into developing new materials for next-generation contact lenses and recycling plastic containers used in distribution. By combining the research capabilities of Tohoku University and the University of Tokyo with Menicon's technology, we aim to build fundamental technology that will enable industry transformation.

 According to Tohoku University, the contract period for the joint research is from April 4st to the end of March 1. The representatives are Professor Tominaga Okabe of the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, Professor Toshihisa Harada of the Institute for Solid State Physics, the University of Tokyo, and Director Eri Ito of the Menicon Future Device Laboratory.

 The research group will shine high-brightness light called soft X-rays on the synthetic resin polymer material that will be the material for next-generation contact lenses to accurately detect minute changes in the surface and develop new materials that will make lenses more comfortable to wear. Furthermore, by combining precise physical measurements using quantum beams and calculations using digital technology, we will take on the challenge of delicate material design.

 Approximately 4 tons of plastic containers are used each year to distribute soft contact lenses, and these containers pass the standards for use in medical devices, and are characterized by extremely low quality deterioration due to heat, light, and pressure. have. It is a perfect material for recycled plastics, and if it is efficiently recycled, it can become a material with low carbon dioxide emissions.

 The research group hopes to establish recycling technology and promote the distribution of environmentally friendly contact lenses throughout society.
