According to a survey by Associate Professor Jun Aida of the Graduate School of Dentistry, Tohoku University, the smoking rate of heat-not-burn tobacco, which continues to spread rapidly, is high among young people and high-income earners. The research team believes that the spread of heat-not-burn tobacco may prevent smoking rates from declining, and there is a need for regulatory policies that take into account the attributes of smokers.
According to Tohoku University, previous studies have reported low smoking rates among young people and high-income earners, but there have been few cases of examining the characteristics of heat-not-burn tobacco smokers. So the research team analyzed the ages and incomes of a total of 2017 men and women who responded to a 4,926 web survey on smoking.
Analyzing the annual income of male heat-not-burn tobacco smokers, it was 200 times that of 300 million to 399 million yen, and 2.67 times that of 400 million yen or more, compared to less than 2.93 million yen.
Cigarette smoking rates among young people and high-income earners have generally been considered low, but the opposite is true when it comes to heat-not-burn tobacco. The research group believes that if heat-not-burn tobacco continues to spread, it may affect the smoking rate in Japan, which has been declining year by year.
