In the "High School Connection Reform", a measure to totally review the education of high schools and universities, attention is focused on the movement to utilize the "e-portfolio" that records various activities of individual high school students as digital data for the evaluation of entrance examinations. I'm gathering. We interviewed Mr. Atsushi Izumi, the director of the admission center of Chiba University of Commerce, who started accepting submissions of e-portfolio from the 2019 entrance examination.

Refer to the activity record of high school days with digital data

"JAPAN e-Portfolio" is a service operated by the Education Information Management Organization, which is licensed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to operate "JAPAN e-Portfolio".Individual high school students can record various activities inside and outside the school as "learning data" with digital data such as texts and photographs. The "learning data" confirmed by the high school teacher to be correct can also be referred to by the university as evaluation materials for entrance examinations.
At Chiba University of Commerce, we have adopted a comprehensive evaluation-type entrance examination that judges not only academic ability but also various activities in high school from various aspects, even in general entrance examinations. From the 2019 entrance examination, it is possible to submit an e-portfolio in addition to the survey form.

1. Students record their learning and achievements in classes and activities at school, qualifications / certifications acquired by themselves, and achievements of activities outside of school on "JAPAN e-Portfolio".
2. Universities participating in "JAPAN e-Portfolio" can utilize the accumulated student data for entrance examinations.

"In the 2019 comprehensive evaluation type entrance examination (see the figure below), the academic ability test was assigned 2 points in 200 subjects, and the evaluation of the survey report was 40 points, for a total of 240 points. Evaluate factors such as grade averages, qualification tests, and other extracurricular activities.

These evaluation criteria will vary slightly depending on the admission policy of each department. Regarding the e-portfolio, we did not use it for the evaluation of entrance examinations, but used it as a reference when evaluating the survey report. It is useful when looking at factors that are difficult to quantify, such as club activities and extracurricular activities.

For example, if the survey report says "participate in Koshien in the baseball club," you can understand what kind of activity you actually played as a player in the e-portfolio.As for the qualification test, you can immediately see what kind of qualification test you were trying other than what you actually have in the e-portfolio.It is a merit to be able to make an entrance examination so that the student's face can be seen, instead of judging only by the score as in the past, "says Mr. Izumi.

Expected to enroll highly motivated students

Eight people submitted their e-portfolio at the entrance examination of Chiba University of Commerce in 2019.Four of them will be enrolled.Regionally, there were test takers from Kanto, Chubu, Tohoku, etc.

"Regarding our university, students who pass the comprehensive evaluation type entrance examination tend to have better grades after admission. There may be differences in motivation, and those who are using e-portfolio at this point I think it's because there are many early adopters who are curious. Each person's individuality is also reflected in the e-portfolio. For example, boys don't have the pictures they have (laughs).

However, those who are doing proper activities in high school can understand that, and there is no difference in comparison with the survey report. Among the successful applicants for the 2019 entrance examination, the student with the best evaluation of the survey was in the high 40s out of 30 points.I think that the score in the high 30s in the pass / fail judgment of the entrance examination is very high, "says Mr. Izumi.

The challenge at this point is that the e-portfolio itself has not yet become widespread on the high school side. Also, it seems that the spread is delayed in public high schools rather than private ones.In addition, as it becomes more widespread in the future, there is concern that the workload of teachers will increase, as each person must check whether the contents of the e-portfolio are correct. It is hoped that high schools, universities, and students themselves, as well as everyone involved, will establish a method of managing their e-portfolio in a way that benefits them.

In addition, the university will conduct a new aptitude test in the comprehensive selection (former AO admission test) in 2021, and will introduce CBT (Computer Based Testing) to answer the questions on the iPad for the aptitude test.An iPad with questions installed will be prepared at the examination venue, and the examinees will be able to solve the problems interactively after entering their PIN. An example of CBT will be released in a form that can be touched and tried on an iPad in the program of the open campus on Sunday, August 8th.
