A new project for education, research and practice of urban engineering is launched

　Two months have passed since then, and although restoration activities such as the basement of the library are still ongoing, the usual campus life has returned to the university.And at the university, a new development that makes use of this experience has begun.In the above-mentioned Department of Urban Engineering, a project was devised with the aim of investigating the cause of disasters and thinking about future countermeasures by utilizing the knowledge of "urban engineering" among all faculty members, including Professor Suemasa. ≪We investigated in detail the damage caused by the inundation of Tamazutsumi and Denenchofu area caused by Typhoon No. 2, clarified the cause of the damage from the collected objective facts, and implemented effective measures (against the inundation of the area). The purpose is to use it as a material for doing so and to propose effective damage reduction methods.Specifically, three major phases are set in consideration of the content to be achieved and the implementation period.

　Phase 12 consists of damage investigation and information gathering that have already been carried out, and introductory research to connect to the next phase.The damage situation survey was divided into 100 groups, each group with one faculty member, and about 10 students participated in the survey, which was conducted in October.The collected information is being organized with the aim of completing it by the end of 2019. "Case study", which was placed in the third quarter of the third year, is a subject that also serves as a preparation for graduation research, but the theme of each laboratory was changed to this disaster. The announcement is also scheduled for January 2020.Due to the relationship with the disaster in the building field, the contents of 1 themes will be reported, including the part in charge of the architecture department of the same Faculty of Engineering.

　Phase XNUMX and Phase XNUMX are mainly the efforts of faculty members.Phase XNUMX is socially and academically important and requires a period of one year or more.Specifically, we plan to summarize the simulation of the inundation situation of Tamazutsumi and Denenchofu XNUMX and XNUMX chome and the proposal of hardware measures, and the investigation and proposal of the evacuation behavior of the residents when the Tamazutsumi and Denenchofu XNUMX and XNUMX chome are inundated.Phase XNUMX is research on inland flooding and countermeasures, which will take several years.We will also consider disaster prevention measures for the entire region beyond the university, such as disaster prediction using simulation and modeling, improvement of sandbags and block walls, and research on high quality.

　This unexpected disaster has given great challenges to faculty members and students, but on the other hand, Tokyo City University has set the theme of research on the issues faced by the city as the theme of "Urban Research City University". For me, it seems that it was an opportunity to utilize it in education and research and to contribute to the local community.In the investigation of the cause of a disaster and the disaster prevention plan in response to it, the interests and speculations of the residents of public organizations and municipalities at each level are easily mixed and complicated, and there are many expectations for the neutrality of the university.Above all, this disaster must be a valuable "experience as a party" for students who have grown up in an environment where safety and security are commonplace in a prosperous society.
