The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) will start development of evaluation technology for lightning detection devices, etc. in order to reduce the downtime of wind turbines due to lightning strikes and increase the operating rate.The contractors for this project are Chubu University, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, and Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., and the project period will be from 2016 to 2017.
Wind power generation in Japan has suffered a lot of damage caused by lightning strikes. In the lightning strike priority areas shown in the "Lightning Strike Map", which is the result of NEDO, new technical standards for lightning strike countermeasures have been established by ministerial ordinance, and have achieved certain effects such as reduction of serious damage to new wind turbines.In particular, immediate measures such as blade damage and fire accidents caused by lightning strikes were required, and it was obligatory to install a lightning detection device on the wind turbine.
However, if the lightning detection device cannot detect the lightning strike that causes damage, it may result in a serious accident due to continued operation, or conversely, it detects a lightning strike that does not affect the wind turbine and stops the operation more than necessary. It may lead to a decrease in the operating rate of the wind turbine.
Therefore, in this project, in order to establish an evaluation method for lightning detection equipment, "lightning impulse waveform test", "frequency characteristic evaluation" using AC power supply, "evaluation by long wave tail current", etc. are performed to detect lightning equipment. Examine the required performance.In addition, by developing a method for confirming the soundness of the grounding system, compiling lightning risk management measures, etc., and by properly detecting lightning, we will start research and development of new lightning detection technology, etc., and stop the windmill due to lightning strikes. The aim is to reduce time and improve the operating rate.
