Kenji Yamamoto, Managing Director of the Japan Association of National Universities, attended the Planning Subcommittee of the Keidanren Educational Issues Committee and explained the future vision of national universities and expectations for industry. After the explanation, we exchanged opinions with Keidanren regarding the promotion of doctoral students and the utilization of the cross-appointment system (* 1).

According to the Japan Association of National Universities, Managing Director Yamamoto emphasizes the development of human resources who have advanced knowledge and can lead the international community as a role required of national universities. It was necessary to develop human resources who could realize their lives.

He argued that globalization of higher education is indispensable for the future image of national universities, and that it is necessary to attract excellent international students and lead to the growth of their own countries, while promoting academic research through international collaboration. However, as public spending on university education is slower than in other developed countries, he argued that more public spending on higher education and science and technology is essential.

In the future, as fields that should be enhanced, not only advanced education and research, but also regional revitalization as a collaborative base of national, public and private universities in the region, and creation of innovation that makes the best use of the characteristics of the region were mentioned.
As for expectations for the industrial world, he requested the active promotion of doctoral course personnel, the activation of personnel exchanges by utilizing the cross-appointment system, and the improvement of a work environment that encourages re-learning at universities.

* 1 Under the cross-appointment system agreement, university faculty members have the status of full-time staff at multiple institutions and work.
