When the color of the illumination light changes, the appearance of the color changes a little.Many computational models (color appearance model, CAM) that simulate the appearance of colors have been proposed, such as the International Commission on Illumination's computational model (CIE CAM02), but some problems have been pointed out.For example, "achromatic color (light that does not feel color)", which is an important light that serves as a standard for evaluating the appearance of color under certain lighting, is not often used because its estimation formula is complicated. ..

 Ichiro Kuriki, an associate professor at the Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University, said that (1) the formula for changes in light that looks white (white point) is complicated in the conventional calculation model, and (2) the decrease in illumination light intensity is simulated. We proposed a simpler solution to the problem of loss of color vividness, that is, a new CAM.In this method, the color of the illumination light and the achromatic color point are estimated from a part of the image, the achromatic color point is aligned to white, and then the brightness is adjusted to simulate the appearance of the color.

 Attempts were made to apply this method to images of "dresses" (#theDress), which are known to have large individual differences in color appearance.The so-called "white / gold" and "blue / black" appearance corresponds to the case where the dress body looks achromatic (white) or the lace looks achromatic (black).That is, when the dress body looks white, it corresponds to interpreting that the pixel color (blue) of the dress body on the image is the color of the illumination light.

 Based on this idea, various parameters related to the color and brightness of the illumination light were changed between "white / gold" and "blue / black" and input to the CAM.As a result of comparing the color appearance reported by 15 observers with the calculation results, it was possible to simulate the color appearance of each individual.It was also shown that the color and brightness estimates of the illumination light are independent.
