An online survey conducted by Gaksy, a scholarship platform, found that half of university students and their parents have a negative impression of scholarships, saying, ``It's scary because it's a loan.''Gaxi believes that this negative impression may be hindering the supply and demand for scholarships.
According to Gaxi, the survey was conducted online in September targeting 9 university students and parents of university-aged children, as well as 1,100 Gaxi members, asking about their scholarship status and knowledge.
As a result, 79.2% of students received loan-type scholarships that required repayment in the future, and only 33.1% received grant-type scholarships that did not require repayment. 61.5% of the students received scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, making it clear that the use of private scholarships is not sufficiently widespread.
Regarding their impressions of scholarships, 48.4% said they were scared because it was a loan. 27.8% said it "reduced the burden on family finances," and 18% said it "gave me the possibility of going to higher education," indicating that they are more likely to have trouble repaying loans in the future than as benefits.
Only 29.1% knew that there were many scholarships available.40.6% of students obtained information about scholarships from an introduction from their school, 32.7% from an information session sponsored by their school, and 28.3% from materials distributed at school. Only 9.9% of respondents had information sources via the Internet, such as SNS or information sites, highlighting the fact that the Internet is not being fully utilized.
