The University of Tokyo has announced that it will open a new five-year course that integrates the arts and sciences in the fall of 5 in order to improve its international competitiveness. We will conduct a global entrance exam to gather students from all over the world and develop a different design education than conventional ones based on interdisciplinary knowledge that integrates the arts and sciences.
According to the University of Tokyo, the name of the new course is "College of Design (tentative name)." We will redefine design as a broad concept that includes the transformation of social systems, and provide design education based on interdisciplinary knowledge that straddles conventional fields such as the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering.
There are approximately 1 students in each grade. It is a five-year program that includes a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, with a diverse group of instructors from Japan and abroad, and students also receive guidance from practitioners who are active on the front lines of private companies. All classes will be conducted in English, and students from existing departments will also be able to take classes. The University of Tokyo aims to create a world-class educational environment by creating an environment where students can learn independently.
Japanese universities have lagged behind in terms of number of publications and internationalization, and their international standing has declined significantly. Increasingly, talented students from Asian countries are choosing universities in China, Singapore, South Korea, and other countries instead of Japan.
For this reason, the University of Tokyo has set out the creation of a new university model in its basic policy announced in 2021, and has been considering it as one of the major measures to be taken. Starting in 2023, a committee will be established within the university to consider the establishment of a new curriculum, and specific discussions will begin.
