Saitama Institute of Technology, in collaboration with Third Wave Co., Ltd. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), has started the "e-sports project" as an independent and creative on-campus project for students, which is officially recognized and supported by the university. Through e-sports, we aim to develop human resources that combine information technology such as IT literacy, programming, and online video distribution with internal communication.
Esports is a competition in which multiple players compete against each other using computer games. Many large-scale competitions are held overseas, and the number of e-sports is increasing to the extent that it is considered as an official event of the Olympic Games.Even in Japan, game companies, PC peripheral device makers, publishers, TV stations, etc. have joined and the "Japan eSports Union" has been established, and the activities of professional gamers who have signed contracts with sponsors are also conspicuous.Thirdwave Co., Ltd., which the university is affiliated with, manufactures gaming PCs and manages various projects related to e-sports, such as sponsoring the "National High School e-Sports Championship".
The "e-sports project" launched this time at Saitama Institute of Technology is one of the voluntary activities of many student groups supported by the university.Volunteers who are highly interested in e-sports gather from all faculties and departments on campus to launch the "e-sports project", and receive advice from Thirdwave Co., Ltd. to work in industry-academia collaboration.Demonstration will be held at the open campus in June 2019.
From April 2019, Saitama Institute of Technology established an AI major in the Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Engineering, ahead of other universities, and changed the name of the Robotics Major in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering to the Department of Robots and Smart Machines. We are making various efforts.
