 1960年代には救命率が10%未満だったが、医療技術の進歩や周産期母子医療センターの整備などから2000年代に入って80%を超すようになってきた。慶應義塾大学病院では2006年、当時世界で2番目に小さい265グラムの女児、2019年2月に男児として当時世界最小268グラムの赤ちゃんを元気に退院させている。
