Benesse Institute for Education has begun research on teaching and evaluation methods that are conscious of active learning. In response to the attention paid to the introduction of active learning in the next revision of the course of study, Professor Kiyomi Akita of the University of Tokyo and Professor Kazuo Koyanagi of Nara University of Education will participate as advisors.

According to the Benesse Institute for Education, active learning is different from teachers' one-sided lecture-style education in which students, children, and students actively participate in learning. The aim is to develop not only knowledge but also thinking ability, judgment ability, and expressive ability. In addition to discovery learning, experiential learning, and problem-solving learning, group discussions, group work, and debates in the classroom are also included.

With the advice of Professor Akita and others, Benesse Institute for Educational Research will study active learning-conscious training, guidance, and evaluation methods. The research results are planned to be used for school lessons.

Active learning appeared in 2012 in a report by the Central Council for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. As a result, domestic universities adopted active learning one after another, and the qualitative change in university classes was attempted.

In the 2014 advisory to the Central Council for Education, it was mentioned that the introduction of active learning would be considered when reviewing the curriculum guidelines for elementary, junior high and high schools. For this reason, the Benesse Institute for Educational Research has decided to begin research on teaching methods and evaluation methods for teachers in schools and on-site to promote classes that are conscious of active learning.
