Four Japanese researchers, including Moe Yasunaga of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Yamaguchi University, will carry out the 4nd "Sumatra Earthquake" of the International Ocean Drilling Program from August 2016th to October 8th, 6. Participating in the "obi excavation voyage" as a representative of Japan.
The "Sumatra Earthquake Zone Drilling Plan" is a plan implemented as part of the International Deep Sea Science Drilling Plan *.The purpose is to excavate off the epicenter of the 2004 Sumatra earthquake by the American international drillship "Joydes Resolution" and to clarify the mechanism of the huge tsunami. For two months, excavate and bore the deep sea floor from the ocean off Sumatra.
More than 30 researchers from all over the world, including Japan, the United States, Europe, India, China, Australia, and Brazil, will be on board this research voyage. , Mari Hamahashi, Research Fellow, Industrial Technology Research Institute, and Hideki Mukaiyoshi, Assistant Professor, Shimane University, are participating.
The huge tsunami that caused enormous damage from the 2004 Sumatra earthquake is similar to the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean earthquake in that it occurred near a shallower trench. However, it is not known why a large fault slip occurs near the trench, and it is thought that elucidation of the mechanism of this special fault slip is important for reducing tsunami damage.
The results of this research voyage are expected to lead to the elucidation of the mechanism of giant tsunami generation along the Japan Trench and Nankai Trench off the coast of Tohoku in Japan. The state of Mr. Kuranaga on board will be reported on Facebook at Yamaguchi University from time to time.
* The International Deep Sea Science Drilling Project is a multilateral international cooperation project that started in October 2013.Twenty-five countries from Japan, the United States, Europe (10 countries), China, South Korea, Australia, India, New Zealand and Brazil participated. With the Japanese deep-sea exploration vessel "Chikyu" and the US drillship "Joydes Resolution" as the main drillships, we will conduct research aimed at elucidating global environmental changes, the internal structure of the earth, the life zone in the crust, etc. ..
