Respect people who have different ideas and know where you stand
In the 1970s when I was studying at university, the word "globalization" didn't exist yet.The word often used at that time was "internationalization," which meant jumping out of the island nation of Japan into the wider world and playing an active role in the international community.Since then, the term has come to be used to mean sharing advanced technologies and industries throughout the world. But now, with the recognition that the earth is a finite thing that everyone should cherish, we must think about what true "globalization" is.It is to respect diverse cultures that are different from ourselves, to share wisdom from different perspectives, to solve the global challenges of humankind, and to aim for the happiness of humankind as a whole.
In this globalization, I think that in the future, the two forces that you need to actually take action are "respect for diversity" and "having a perspective to relativize yourself." ..
At the University of Tokyo, students from all over the country and overseas with various ideas and backgrounds are gathering, and an environment that respects diversity is in place. When I enter the University of Tokyo, I hope that through extracurricular activities and living in the dormitory, I will find friends who have different ideas and consciously interact with them. The exchanges that transcend the humanities and sciences that I have cultivated through club activities during the College of Liberal Arts have become a valuable asset in my life.
It is also important to get in touch with the opposite academic fields that you want to study professionally and to acquire a perspective to relativize them.I would like you to experience cutting-edge research in the natural sciences in the humanities, and human wisdom regarding culture and society in the sciences.Universities have a wealth of research and traditions. It's too wasteful to think that you should take the necessary credits and graduate. (I want you to think about making the most of the place of university.
