Doshisha University's "Faculty of Culture and Information Studies" aims to create "comprehensive knowledge" through interdisciplinary and systematic learning of culture-related subjects and data science-related subjects.

This time, we interviewed Associate Professor Noriko Ito of the Language Resources Laboratory, who is in charge of linguistics.

Exploring the mechanism of verbal communication,
Research and development of a computer that can talk naturally with humans

The field of language communication using AI has made dramatic progress in the last few years. Associate Professor Noriko Ito is involved in research and development of a computer that can talk naturally with people in this field, which has been gaining more attention with the advent of ChatGPT.

“People change their way of speaking and what they say based on the other person. In the same way, when a robot or computer converses with a person, it predicts to some extent what kind of person the user will be, and adapts to it. Ultimately, I want to create a system like "Doraemon" that allows communication, so I'm continuing my joint research. From the standpoint of my field of linguistics, we first need to know how people speak. Therefore, we have collected data over several years on the language used when people are conversing with each other, the gaze and gestures, the "pause" when speaking, and the way words are conveyed when chatting over text. Analyzing. said Associate Professor Ito.

Popular classes in which faculty members from different fields of specialization collaborate
"Joint Research"

In addition to linguistics, the Faculty of Culture and Information Studies has many faculty members who specialize in a wide range of fields, such as cognitive science and information engineering.

Taking advantage of its characteristics, the Faculty not only offers courses that integrate humanities and sciences in terms of education, but also launches various cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects in terms of research. This is embodied in "joint research," in which multiple faculty members with different specialties team up and conduct joint classes. This course, which is like a microcosm of the faculty's educational research activities, is gaining popularity as a humanities and science fusion class that can only be realized by the Faculty of Culture and Information Studies.

“In my case, I am currently in charge of two joint research classes. The second is a class directly connected to system development conducted by a robotics professor, a behavioral sciences professor, and a linguistics professor. You will learn practically the differences between talking to people, robots, and avatars while moving and talking with avatars.

Taking classes with teachers who specialize in other fields is really interesting. As a teacher, I have broadened my horizons and the range of classes and research that I can do. For the students who take the classes, the collaboration of the three areas of expertise allows them to learn more broadly and deeply.I am envious of the current students studying at the Faculty of Culture and Information Studies, who have a truly blessed environment. ”
