A joint research team of Tohoku University, RIKEN, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone participated in an international competition held at WMT, an international conference specializing in machine translation, and the news translation tasks were English-German, German-English, Japanese-English, English-Japanese. Won the 1st place in the manual translation quality evaluation (including the same rate).
The joint research team was led by Professor Jun Suzuki of the Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University, and consisted of five members from three organizations.All five members are also enrolled in the Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University.
The WMT International Competition is known to be the most prestigious in the field of machine translation.Among them, the news translation task has the longest history and is the most competitive in the basic performance evaluation of machine translation systems.
The machine translation system developed by the research team received a higher evaluation than other systems in the translation quality evaluation by linguists.Furthermore, in recognition of this machine translation system development, the 16th AAMT Nagao Award was given by the Asia-Pacific Association for Machine Translation. The AAMT Nagao Award is given to people and organizations that have contributed to the practical application of machine translation systems.
