Professor Toshio Okabe of the Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Kyoto University, who designed and built a system that enables mutual authentication cooperation, was selected for the 2019 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award and Science and Technology Award.The award ceremony will be held on the 17th at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology lecture hall in Kasumigaseki, Tokyo, with the attendance of Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Masahiko Shibayama.
According to the University of Tokyo, the winners of this research are Professor Okabe, Specially Appointed Researcher Ken Nishimura of the National Institute of Informatics, Associate Professor Shuyuki Sato of the Information Technology Center, the University of Tokyo, and Associate Professor Hideaki Goto of the Cyber Science Center of Tohoku University. Professor Noboru Sonehara, Faculty of Policy Studies, Tsuda Juku University.
Professor Okabe et al. Developed an academic authentication system, which is a common authentication platform for universities nationwide, based on international standards, and also designed and built an international wireless LAN authentication cooperation system and an electronic certificate issuance service.
These are the developments of the mechanism that was conceived more than ten years ago as a national common electronic authentication platform for inter-university collaboration, and all of them have been put into practical use as services provided by the National Institute of Informatics, and as of the end of March. It is used by 3-220 institutions.
Professor Okabe said, "There is an increasing need to strengthen security and protect privacy at universities and research institutes. We would like to continue research to further enhance academic certification cooperation and expand the scope of application."
In the 2019 Science and Technology Minister's Commendation, 23 cases including the group of Professor Okabe and others in the development section, 43 cases in the research section, 5 cases in the science and technology promotion section, 10 cases in the technology section, and 11 cases in the understanding promotion section. The case was selected for the Science and Technology Award, 99 for the Young Scientist Award, and 965 for the Ingenuity and Ingenuity Award.
