From the spring semester of 2023, Ritsumeikan University will combine machine translation with OpenAI's artificial intelligence chatbot "ChatGPT" in part of the English classes of the "Project Publishing English Program (PEP)" that will be developed in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Trial introduction of the English learning tool "Transable".

 The service “Transable” to be introduced on a trial basis is an English learning tool that combines machine translation and AI chat (ChatGPT) service.In addition to proposing Japanese sentences that users want to send in appropriate English sentences by AI chatbot, we will explain why the sentences are judged to be appropriate.

 The trial introduction period is from April 2023, 4 to September 6, 2023. Approximately 9 students (Faculty of Life Sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences) who take the Project-based English Program use it. In the educational program PEP, which aims to teach English that can be used in the real world with a focus on “transmission type”, we will prepare a teaching environment that can deepen the understanding of English by actively using AI technology, improve the accuracy of output in English, and use English skills that can be used in society The aim is for students to actively acquire

 The service itself is part of the Ritsumeikan University Global Innovation Research Organization (R-GIRO) 4th Core Formation R-GIRO Research Program "Symbol Emergent System Science Creation: Academic Interdisciplinary Research Center for Real-World Artificial Intelligence and Next-Generation Symbiotic Society" It was developed by Kohei Sugiyama, a research assistant (doctoral student at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University) with the support of Study Meter Co., Ltd.This initiative is also positioned as part of research activities, and Professor Tadahiro Taniguchi (Faculty of Information Science and Engineering), an AI researcher and project leader of the program, serves as an advisor for the educational use of AI technology. is the responsibility of the Multimodal Language Education Group within the project.

 Through this initiative, Ritsumeikan University aims to improve the effectiveness of education through the use of AI technology by providing an environment in which AI chatbots provide explanations based on machine translation for English classes at the university.In addition, we will examine what kind of changes will occur in learning outcomes and student psychology, and explore the ideal state of university English education in a new era.
