Assistant Professor Haruka Sasaki of Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry has been selected as one of the 100 editions of the 2023 Asian Scientists, which honors Asian scientists who have pushed the boundaries of their fields of expertise and improved people's lives and environments.She was selected by the Asian Scientist Magazine, a scientific journal in Singapore, in recognition of her research results that clarified the relationship between asthma and melatonin.
According to Tohoku University, the 100 Asian Scientists has been selected by Asian Scientist Magazine every year since 2016 to show outstanding achievements, such as receiving national awards from each country.
Assistant Professor Sasaki received the award for his "clarification of the mechanisms that enhance tracheal smooth muscle contraction via melatonin MT2 receptors."In his research, Assistant Professor Sasaki said that melatonin, a hormone whose blood concentration peaks at night, may be related to exacerbation of asthma attacks by enhancing the contraction of tracheal smooth muscle, and that melatonin may be related to exacerbation of asthma attacks. We clarified the possibility that weakening the effect may hinder treatment.In 2022, Assistant Professor Sasaki received the 17th L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Scientist Japan Encouragement Award in the life science field for this research.
The 100 Asian Scientists 2023 Edition includes Assistant Professor Sasaki, Masashi Hattori of the Asian Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Kaori Sugihara, Associate Professor of the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, Yasuka Toda, Specially Appointed Lecturer of the Faculty of Agriculture, Meiji University, and Hiroshima. A total of 12 scientists were selected, including Assistant Professor Haruna Katayama of the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering.
