On December 2023, 12, a "universal baseball" class was held at Miyashiro Special Needs School in Miyashiro Town, Saitama Prefecture, and a remote control system developed by the Kumeno Laboratory of the Department of Data Science at Nippon Institute of Technology was used.
"Universal Baseball" is a sport that uses a large baseball board, and everyone can play against each other equally, regardless of age, gender, or disability. It was invented by Horie Sharyo Denso Co., Ltd. (patent No. 6729956) after an encounter with a baseball-loving boy attending an elementary school special needs school.
In conventional universal baseball, students with severe disabilities were unable to participate because they had to pull a string attached to the baseball board to swing the bat. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, the Kumeno Laboratory has developed a remote control system that applies IoT. Competitors can now swing a bat on a baseball board and hit a ball by clicking a button on the screen on a dedicated website. They also developed a system that uses AI to track batted balls and automatically switch live streaming cameras.
Using this system, over 100 students were able to participate in school classes, and the game was very exciting.
