Hassho Gakuen Educational Corporation, which operates Nakakyushu Junior College (Yashiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture), held a board of directors meeting and decided to stop recruiting students from 2025. The decision was made that it would be difficult to continue operating the junior college due to the unstoppable decline in the number of applicants due to young people's preference for four-year universities.

According to Nakakyushu Junior College, the college opened in 1974 with a campus in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. To date, the school has produced approximately 6,500 graduates, and currently has two departments: the Department of Management and Welfare and the Department of Early Childhood Care. However, for the 2 academic year, there were only 2023 students out of the total capacity of 100, resulting in a fill rate of less than 59%. The sufficiency rate was over 6% in 2020-2021, but it dropped to 7% in 2022, and the sufficiency rate is decreasing every year.

Although we have taken measures such as changing the information and business course in the Department of Management and Welfare to the International Business course and reducing the number of students in the Early Childhood Care Department from 80 to 50, we have not been able to stem the decline in the fill rate. . New students in April will be the last current students. As it is the only childcare worker training institution in southern Kumamoto Prefecture, some are concerned about the growing shortage of childcare workers.

Universities and junior colleges in Kumamoto Prefecture are concentrated in Kumamoto City. Outside of Kumamoto City, there are Kyushu University of Nursing and Welfare, which has submitted a request for publicization to Tamana City in the northern area of the prefecture, and Tokai University Aso Kumamoto in the central area of the prefecture. There is Rinku Campus and Heisei College of Music, but in other cities, including junior colleges, the only one is Nakakyushu Junior College in Yatsushiro City. With the suspension of recruitment at Nakakyushu Junior College, there will be no university or junior college in the southern area of the prefecture.
