Working with companies to tackle real corporate issues and challenging questions that have no right answer
Otemae University plans to open the Faculty of Business Administration in April 2023.We interviewed Professor Masaaki Kitamura, who is the head of the preparatory office for the establishment of the Faculty of Business Administration and is scheduled to be appointed as the dean of the Faculty, about the learning at the Faculty, where students acquire the ability to work and survive in their own way in a rapidly changing society.
When establishing the Faculty of Business Administration, the "Human Resource Development Planning Conference" was established by the company and the university, and it is said that the educational content was repeatedly discussed, indicating the seriousness of the university.
Among them, the biggest feature of the curriculum is probably "Industry-Academia Collaboration PBL (Project Based Learning)" jointly developed with about 20 companies.We will search for solutions by repeating research, analysis, and discussion on the theme of the problems that companies actually have.Companies such as Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Sakura Color Products Corporation, House Foods, and Wacoal have already announced their participation as partner companies, and learning with a live feeling linked to the actual business society will be realized. It is scheduled to be introduced in subjects such as "Leadership and Problem Solving," "Management Strategy," "Organizational Behavior," and "Distribution Industry Theory," and can be taken from the first year.
The details of the flow differ for each subject, but the feature is that students learn by combining challenges from companies and lectures through a total of 15 classes. You can work with a sense of purpose.
First of all, in the first half of the class, you will receive an explanation of the issues faced by companies.After that, students deepen their understanding of the problem through lectures and learn the knowledge and theories necessary for problem solving.At the same time, we will proceed with work such as research, analysis, and discussion in groups to give shape to solutions.Ultimately, the flow is to make a presentation to the company and receive feedback.Since company employees participate in the class, there is a possibility that the proposal will actually be adopted depending on the content of the proposal.
“Business administration is a practical field of study. Learning in an environment that closely resembles the real world will give you strength, and feedback from companies will serve as proof that you have been recognized by society, which should lead to confidence in your students. I expect that the opportunity to learn concretely about work and corporate activities will be a great stimulus for thinking about careers.”
In addition, it is unique to the "Otemae method" that "reflection (introspection)" called reflection is performed at the end of the class.It is devised so that you can find your own career by noticing your strengths, interests, interests, and missions from your experience, rather than ending it by doing it all.
Three R cycles: "research (theory / research)" in lectures and group work, "reality (actual, practice)" to tackle actual corporate issues, and "reflection (introspection)" that leads to personal growth. By turning around, we will lay the foundation for a career that will survive the 3-year life.
