Kazuhiro Nagata, Director of the Institute of Protein Dynamics, Kyoto Sangyo University (Professor, Faculty of Life Sciences) has decided to receive the 2017 "Hans Neurath Award" from the international organization "The Protein Society".
This award is given to individuals who have made outstanding achievements in the field of basic research in protein science. This is the first Japanese award. Attended the award ceremony in Montreal, Canada in July and gave a commemorative lecture.
The reason for the award was that it brought about basic discoveries that deepened and advanced our understanding of the quality control mechanism of proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum. The first achievements include the discovery of collagen-specific molecular chaperone Hsp47 and its basic functional analysis.
Furthermore, we have been elucidating the maintenance mechanism of endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis in mammalian cells and the basic molecular mechanism of protein quality control by endoplasmic reticulum-related degradation. Great achievements in elucidating the decomposition mechanism.
Director Kazuhiro Nagata was born in 1947 in Shiga prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Kyoto University, after working at a corporate research institute, he was a lecturer at the Institute for Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases, Kyoto University, a visiting associate professor at the National Cancer Institute, a professor at the Institute for Chest Diseases, Kyoto University, and a professor at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In 2010, he became the first dean of the Faculty of Comprehensive Life Sciences, Kyoto University of Industry. In 2016, he became the first director of the Institute for Protein Dynamics of the same university.Known for his activities as a singer, he is the singer of the Miyanaka Utakai Hajime.
