The Japan English Language Proficiency Testing Association will be renewing the Practical English Proficiency Test (Eiken) with some questions in a new format starting from the first exam in 2024 for grades 1 and above (Eiken S-CBT will be updated in 3). Renewal is scheduled to start from May implementation). Sample questions and study methods by Tetsuya Yasukochi are available on a special website.

Up until now, Eiken has aimed to ask questions based on the view of English proficiency expressed in the curriculum guidelines of the time. The current curriculum guidelines for "Foreign Languages" aim to enrich language activities that integrate multiple skills (domains). It is also necessary to develop thinking, judgment, and expressive abilities while considering how to use language according to the situation. Based on these considerations, we have decided to revamp the test as soon as possible, incorporating a question format that reflects a new perspective on English proficiency.

The exam times will be changed for pre-2nd and 3rd grade. The test time for Pre-2nd grade will be increased from 75 minutes to 80 minutes, which will be extended by 5 minutes, and for Level 3, the exam time will be increased from 50 minutes to 65 minutes, which will be extended by 15 minutes. There are no changes to exam times for other grades.

 試験の内容については、Readingの設問数が1級は41問→35問、準1級は41問→31問、2級は38問→31問、準2級は37問→29問へ設問数が削減される。3級は変更しない。

For Writing, the number of English composition questions will be increased from one to two for Level 1, Pre-1st, and Level 2, and ``Summary'' questions will be asked in addition to the existing ``Opinion Essay'' questions. For pre-1nd and 2rd grade, the number of English composition questions will be increased from one to two, and in addition to the existing ``opinion essay'' questions, ``email'' questions will be asked.

Speaking has been renewed only for Pre-1st grade, and a topic introduction sentence has been added to the question (No. 4) that asks examinees' own opinions. Listening remains unchanged for all grades. There are no changes to the passing standard score or CEFR calculation range.
