Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. have signed an open innovation inter-organizational agreement and started joint research from FY2019 toward the social implementation of a diagnostic and treatment support system in the dental field utilizing artificial intelligence (AI).This is the first time for Tokyo Medical and Dental University to collaborate in the dental field under the open innovation system.
According to Tokyo Medical and Dental University, the dramatic progress in AI technology in recent years has led to the advancement of social implementation of AI in various fields.In the medical field, research on AI utilization is progressing in the examination of skin cancer and dementia, and the prediction of heart attack.There is a growing movement to apply AI in the fields of genes and medical image analysis.
In the field of dentistry, diagnosis has been made by combining information obtained from tooth and gingival inspection by a dentist and two-dimensional image data, but research such as diagnosis of orthodontic treatment by AI and diagnosis of periodontal disease by X-ray image analysis has been conducted. At the beginning, attention has been focused on the utilization of cutting-edge AI technology.
Tokyo Medical and Dental University has been conducting research in the field of dentistry for a long time, and has a large amount of data on dental practice at the hospital attached to the Faculty of Dentistry.By partnering with Mitsui & Co., which aims to create new businesses that solve various social issues by having contact with industries in a wide range of fields, it is expected that it will be possible to advance dental care by utilizing AI.
