Tohoku University has signed a memorandum of understanding on English education with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the United States, which provides TOEFL for private English exams.Tohoku University will place TOEFL content at the center of English education in the first and second years of the bachelor's program from 2020. This is the first time that ETS and a Japanese university corporation have signed a partnership agreement.
According to Tohoku University, the purpose is to improve the level of English education at Tohoku University by utilizing TOEFL content, which is treated as a standard in English education around the world.In addition to utilizing it as a means of monitoring and evaluating the progress of learning after enrollment, we will promote joint research on improving curriculum and educational programs focusing on the ripple effect of the test.
In addition, joint seminars and workshops will be held in collaboration with the CIEE International Education Exchange Council, which is the TOEFL Japan secretariat.
ETS is a non-profit organization founded in 1947 by the American Board of Education, the American University Board, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Promotion of Education, and is headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey. In addition to TOEFL, it provides various tests such as TOEIC and GRE, and is used in about 180 countries around the world.
