Professor Gaku Yamamoto of Tokyo University of Science succeeded in developing a hologram memory technology with a capacity of 2TB (terabyte) for the first time in the world.With new technology that realizes ultra-large capacity, power saving, long-term storage, and low operating cost at once, we are also prototyping an experimental aircraft capable of recording and playing back 5TB, which is 400 times that of DVD with a 2-inch disc. With the goal of preserving and recording the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in high-definition video, we are planning to further develop it.

 According to the announcement, the research was carried out in collaboration with Mitsubishi Chemical, Nanophotonics Engineering Promotion Organization, and Dai Nippon Printing, utilizing the research and development funds of the Energy and Environmental New Technology Leading Program of the Industrial Technology Development Organization.Professor Yamamoto has realized a large capacity of stored records and high-speed playback by using the "3D cross-shift multiplex method" that he developed independently, a small and simple optical system, and a mechanical mechanism.

 In the three-dimensional cross-shift multiplex method, signal light and spherical reference light are reacted in a medium and recorded. By changing the angle of the holography using the film thickness, they are independent at the same location. It is possible to record multiple holography.

 At the same time, we also developed a lens for hologram memory, information input / output signal processing technology, and recording / playback simulation technology.By combining these, we prototyped an experimental aircraft capable of recording and reproducing 2TB.In the future, we would like to continue improving the experimental aircraft together with partner companies and organizations, and launch new products with the goal of three years from now.Since hologram memory has ultra-large capacity and long-term storage capacity, and also has low power consumption, it can be expected to be used for information archiving at broadcasting stations and data centers that store huge amounts of information.
