Following the Upper House election held on July 7, Professor Noboru Sekiya of the Faculty of Law, Politics and Economics of Chiba University conducted an urgent questionnaire to students of the same university. It was found that the voting environment affected the turnout.

This survey was conducted by conducting a questionnaire to 609 students (10 teens, 533 20s) from Chiba University, along with the students who participated in the class "Thinking about Young People's Political Participation". In the House of Councilors election, where the 76-year-old election right was first introduced, he clarified the tendency seen in student voting behavior.

As a result of the survey, the turnout of teenage students is 10%.In voting behavior, 67% of the students who voted answered that they lived in their parents'house and their resident's card is also in their parents' house, while 75% of the students who did not vote "lived outside their parents' house and have a resident's card". Is still at home. "

Students who did not vote answered that the reason was "I had another plan" (36%) and "I don't know how and where to vote" (32%), and "I'm not interested in politics". Less than 1% of the respondents answered, "Because it has nothing to do with my future problems."In addition, 38% of the students answered that they did not know about the "absentee ballot" that can be voted in cities, wards, towns and villages other than the registered place of the list.

When asked what they expected about the voting environment, "I hope I can vote online" (47%), "I hope there is a polling place in the university" (40%), and "The procedure for absentee voting is simpler." It would be nice to be "(32%).

"Information on mass media such as TV and newspapers" (65%) and "Information on the Internet / SNS" (53%) were the most useful in obtaining information on elections, and the students who voted said "my own". "It's a future issue" (46%), "I think it's an obligation rather than a right" (45%), and "I'm interested in politics (37%)." "Details of policy" (65%) and "party name" (45%) stood out.

Regarding the results of the survey, Professor Sekiya said, "It is necessary to create a place for discussing political interests and future issues, as well as the voting conditions, including whether or not the resident's card will be moved, and the voting. There is a need to improve the voting environment, such as ease of use. "
