Associate Professor Akio Honda of the Department of Information Design, Faculty of Information, Shizuoka University of Science and Technology, and Iota Sakai of the same department (2021 graduate) conducted a survey on how to wear helmets when commuting to elementary schools in Shizuoka Prefecture. announced.

In June 2021, five children were injured in an accident in Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture. After that, an emergency inspection of school roads was carried out, and there were about 6 dangerous school roads nationwide, and about 5 in Shizuoka Prefecture as of the end of October, making safety measures an urgent issue.

One of the countermeasures is the "wearing of school children's helmets" which is effective in reducing traffic accidents and accidental deaths. In 2017, the Shizuoka Prefectural Board of Education conducted a traffic safety survey and found that 33.4% of elementary schools (502 out of 168 public elementary schools in the prefecture) required helmets to be worn on the way to and from school. However, the factors related to the subsequent situation and instruction have not been examined so far.

Therefore, Associate Professor Akio Honda (specialty: psychology) of the Department of Information Design, Faculty of Information, Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology, and Iota Sakai (2021 graduate) of the same department, are planning to use a helmet when attending elementary school in Shizuoka Prefecture at the end of 2021. A questionnaire survey was conducted on the state of wearing guidance. The survey was conducted by mailing questionnaires to 497 schools (5%) randomly selected from 248 elementary schools in the prefecture (excluding 50 branch schools).

Schools that teach how to wear helmets cite "the heavy traffic on school roads (selection rate: 80.0%)" as the reason, while schools that do not teach how to wear helmets say "there are no requests or opinions from parents." (selection rate 67.6%)", and in order to spread the guidance, it is necessary to "improve the lightweight performance of the helmet and reduce the physical burden on children (selection rate 64.0%)". It can be seen that it is considered necessary.

It is important not only for safety measures such as dangerous commuting roads, but also for measures against natural disasters such as the Nankai Trough earthquake, which is expected to cause enormous damage, to understand the instruction to wear helmets when commuting to school in elementary schools.Since it is expected that there will be regional differences in helmet wearing guidance, it is possible that by developing this research into a national survey in the future, we will be able to obtain knowledge that will contribute to the improvement of safety measures and environmental measures in Japanese elementary schools. considered to be high.

The results of this research were presented at the 2022st (FY10) Society of Social Safety Research Research Presentation (Autumn) held at the Shizuoka Prefecture Earthquake Disaster Prevention Center from October 29 to 30, 51. Guidance Status: 2022 Shizuoka Prefecture Fact-Finding Survey” was announced.
