The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology interviewed a total of 2017 institutions, including national and public universities, national, public and private colleges of technology, and inter-university research institutes, regarding joint research with private companies, contract research, and clinical trial results as of the end of March 3.
According to the report, the research funds received from private companies by universities and others in 2016 reached 848 billion yen, which was 83 billion yen (10.9%) higher than the previous year. This is the first time that the survey has exceeded 800 billion yen since the survey was started in 2003.
Of this amount, the amount of large-scale research received per case was 1 billion yen, which was 1,000 billion yen (273%) higher than the previous year.The number of large-scale studies conducted has also risen to 31, an increase of 12.7 (1.093%) from the previous year.
Joint research expenses with private companies were 526 billion yen, an increase of 58 billion yen (12.5%) from the previous year.This is the first time that joint research expenses have exceeded 500 billion yen.The number of research conducted was 2, an increase of 3,021 (2,200%) from the previous year.
The amount of research commissioned by private companies reached 116 billion yen, which was 6 million yen (5.5%) higher than the previous year. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have exceeded 100 billion yen.The number of research conducted was 4, an increase of 7,319 (174%) from the previous year.
