A research group led by Professor Emeritus Shigehiko Suzuki of Kyoto University devised a functional artificial skin that was an improvement over the conventional artificial skin, and confirmed its effectiveness in animal experiments. It is said that skin regeneration comparable to cell therapy will be possible.

At Kyoto University, skin regeneration treatment using "two-layer artificial dermis" (artificial skin with a two-layer structure in which a collagen sponge is covered with a silicone film) developed by Professor Emeritus Suzuki and others has been performed. When artificial skin is applied to the wound surface where the skin is defective, cells and capillaries necessary for skin regeneration enter the collagen sponge, the patient's own pseudodermis is reborn, and the sponge itself is not absorbed.

However, this artificial skin treatment is vulnerable to infection and may not regenerate the skin well on poorly circulated wounds. Therefore, artificial skin was not sufficiently effective for intractable skin ulcers such as diabetic ulcers and pressure ulcers, which have been increasing in recent years. In addition, cell therapy in which patient cells are cultured and contained in artificial skin promotes skin regeneration, but the treatment cost is very high.

Therefore, the research group has improved the conventional artificial skin, and has the functionality of adsorbing basic fibroblast growth factor, which is widely used as a therapeutic agent for intractable ulcers, and slowly releasing (sustained release) over a week or more. An artificial skin was devised and its effectiveness was confirmed in animal experiments. After that, with the support of the Institute for Advancement of Clinical Research (iACT) of Kyoto University Hospital, Gunze Co., Ltd. was in charge of manufacturing artificial skin, and since 1, a doctor-led clinical trial of this functional artificial skin has been conducted. This time, it was approved for manufacturing as a new medical device.

It has been confirmed that the therapeutic effect of functional artificial skin is equivalent to that of artificial skin with added cells, and the cost is about 1/10 of that of overseas products. It will be launched in the coming months and is expected to be a useful treatment for skin regeneration treatment including intractable ulcers.
