Professor Satoshi Yamashita of the Department of Global Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kitami Institute of Technology and others conducted an emergency disaster survey of the area affected by the Iburi Eastern Earthquake, which occurred on September 2018, 9 and recorded a seismic intensity of 6 for the first time in Hokkaido, and compiled a preliminary report. ..There have been reports of vivid local disasters such as liquefaction in Kiyota Ward, Sapporo City, and sediment-related disasters in Atsuma Town.

According to Kitami Institute of Technology, the research members are Professor Yamashita, Associate Professor Takayuki Kawaguchi, Assistant Professor Tatsuya Watanabe, and Assistant Professor Shunzo Kawajiri. In addition to the liquefaction in Kiyota Ward, Sapporo City, the landslide disaster in Yoshino, Atsuma Town, and the landslide disaster in the Tomisato district, the site was visited for two days from the day after the earthquake, centering on the damage to the Mukawa River embankment.

In Kiyota Ward, Sapporo City, paved roads turned like waves, depressions and cracks were seen here and there, and many private houses were greatly tilted. It is speculated that the damaged area was once a paddy field, and the groundwater level in the buried embankment was high. For this reason, the liquefied embankment flowed, and it seems that it caused great damage.

In the Yoshino and Tomisato districts of Atsuma Town, the slopes of the mountains collapsed, swallowing private houses under the cliffs, and flowing out to paddy fields. The research group believes that the quake shook and destabilized the sediment on the slope and collapsed. Many cracks have been seen on the embankment of the Mukawa River that flows through Mukawa Town, and some of the sandblasts that are thought to have occurred due to liquefaction have also been confirmed.

It is estimated that the eastern Iburi earthquake shook violently with a seismic intensity of 7 in the Yoshino district of Atsuma Town and a seismic intensity of less than 5 in Kiyota Ward and Mukawa Town of Sapporo City.According to the announcement by the Hokkaido Government, as of 16:17 on the 30th, a total of 36 people were killed, including 41 people in Atsuma Town, and 696 people were injured.
