On April 2024, 4, Ibaraki University progressively dissolved the Frontier Applied Atomic Science Research Center and established the Atomic Science Research and Education Center at the Tokai Satellite Campus (within the Ibaraki Quantum Beam Research Center, Tokai Village, Naka District, Ibaraki Prefecture). We aim to bring together related fields that were previously dispersed in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science and develop safer next-generation energy technologies.

According to Ibaraki University, the Atomic Science Research and Education Center will have three departments: the Social and Regional Issues Collaborative Solution Office, Applied Nuclear Science, Next Generation Innovative Reactors, and Radiation Safety, and Atomic Science Research and Education Center Professor Kazuaki Iwasa will serve as the center's director. He took office. There are 3 faculty members and 20 advanced research support professionals.

The research to be carried out will include the ``high-temperature gas reactor,'' which is expected to be a next-generation nuclear reactor, nuclear fusion, and the effects of radiation. The company is also considering opening a department related to local communities and disaster prevention. In addition, we will develop educational programs for undergraduate and graduate students and contribute to the development of researchers and advanced engineers who will support the future field of atomic science.

In addition to the Tokai Daini Nuclear Power Plant, Tokai Village is home to nuclear research institutions such as the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), and the high-intensity proton accelerator facility J-PARC. The predecessor, the Frontier Applied Atomic Science Research Center, has been collaborating with these institutions to research materials using X-rays and research on neutrons.

Ibaraki University President Hiroyuki Ota said, ``The development of atomic science is extremely important for innovative energy development and industrial innovation. We will establish a new comprehensive atomic science and foster researchers and advanced engineers, thereby contributing to a sustainable energy society.'' I would like to aim to build this.''
