Japan IDDM Network, an NPO in Saga Prefecture that supports type 1 diabetes patients and their families nationwide, has provided a research grant of 1 million yen to Fukuoka University, which aims to eradicate type 1,000 diabetes by using the hometown tax donated to Saga Prefecture as a source of funds. do.The presentation ceremony will be held on the 30th at the Fukuoka University Headquarters in Jonan Ward, Fukuoka City.

According to the Japan IDDM Network, the presentation ceremony will be attended by Mr. Yoichi Omura, Managing Director of the Network, President Masatoshi Yamaguchi of Fukuoka University, and Professor Shota Kodama of the Faculty of Medicine, and the grant will be handed over to the university. The grant will be used for the cost of large animal experiments for the realization of bioartificial islet transplantation (* 1) into humans, which Professor Kodama is studying.

Islet transplantation, which is a curative treatment for type 1 diabetes, is expected to be a new treatment method that is less burdensome to the body than pancreatic organ transplantation and is free from hypoglycemic attacks and insulin treatment. However, due to the absolute shortage of donated organs, islet cells are not sufficiently distributed to patients.
For this reason, Professor Kodama has been studying the selection of sites that do not cause inflammation and may promote the regeneration of transplanted islets, and bioartificial islet transplantation. In the future, we aim to establish a more advanced transplantation method through large animal experiments.

The Japan IDDM Network made a donation of 2016 million yen to Fukuoka University in 2,000, but expecting further progress in research at Fukuoka University, the hometown tax donation received by Saga Prefecture by designating the network, etc. Based on this, I decided to give the grant again.
