In collaboration with Associate Professor Seigo Kawase of Osaka University of Economics and Law, Kwansei Gakuin High School's high school teacher, "Ichthyological", two Japanese freshwater species of the Cyprinidae, "Nagarekamatsuka" and "Sunagokamatsuka" Announced as a new species in "Research".

Kamatsuka is a freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family that is widely distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, and is a common river fish that is often found mainly in the middle reaches of rivers. When he was a student at Kwansei Gakuin High School, Tominaga noticed that there are two types of Kamatsuka that can be found in agricultural canals in Kyoto Prefecture, with different faces and body shapes. After that, he went on to graduate school at Kyoto University from Kwansei Gakuin University.Under the guidance of Associate Professor Katsutoshi Watanabe of Kyoto University, who is an expert in freshwater fish, I have been conducting research on collecting kamatsuka from all over Japan and investigating their genes.

As a result, it was found that Kamatsuka from Japan contains three strains with significantly different genes. Two of them are distributed in western Japan and one in eastern Japan, and it was found that the two types of Photinia villosa in Kyoto Prefecture, which triggered the research, correspond to the two strains in western Japan, and were announced in 3.

A detailed examination of the morphology of these three genetically identified specimens revealed that they were distinguishable from each other due to differences in lip and whiskers length, pectoral fin shape, and body mottle.Of these, one line was considered to be the real "Kamatsuka", and two lines were considered to be another new species. Therefore, as a result of a detailed comparison of the morphology of the specimens of Photinia villosa collected from all over Japan, the specimens that serve as the standard for "Photinia villosa", and the specimens of closely related species of Photinia villosa overseas, two species that are different from any of the closely related species are found. It was revealed that it existed and it was concluded that it was a new species.

In the future, Professor Tominaga says that he would like to convey the appeal of biological and scientific research to students through research and guidance at his alma mater, Kwansei Gakuin High School, while working on interesting research themes of Kamatsuka.
