A research group led by Professor Hisashi Seki of the Teiko University Medical and Fungal Research Center discovered a lactic acid bacterium that suppresses the rise in blood glucose level after ingestion of sucrose. So far, there have been reports of lactic acid bacteria showing effects in experiments using mammals such as mice, but Professor Sekimizu and his colleagues have confirmed the effects in human clinical trials for the first time.

According to Teikyo University, sucrose is one of the sweeteners added to foods. It is broken down into glucose and fructose by enzymes in the intestinal tract, and after being absorbed from the intestinal tract, it raises the blood sugar level.

The research group of Professor Sekimizu et al. Seems that foods containing substances that inhibit the action of enzymes and glucose absorption have the effect of suppressing the rise in blood glucose level after meals, and are searching for functional lactic acid bacteria in collaboration with the Institute for Genome Drug Discovery. I proceeded and found the enterococcal "YM0831" strain.

It was also confirmed that the enterococcal "YM0831" strain showed a function of suppressing an increase in glucose concentration in the body fluid of silk moth ingested glucose, and also inhibited glucose uptake in the human body.It was also found that yogurt produced using the enterococcal "YM0831" strain has the same function. The research group of Professor Sekimizu and others sees the enterococcal "YM0831" strain as promising for food development that suppresses the rise in blood glucose level.

Since a diabetes treatment drug that utilizes a substance that inhibits the action of enzymes has already been released, it is expected that the enterococcal "YM0831" strain will also be effective in treating diabetes.
