The research group of Tokai University's Specially Appointed Associate Professor Yoshiaki Orihara (Ocean Research Institute) and others, in collaboration with Specially Appointed Associate Professor Masashi Kamogawa (Global Regional Center Earthquake Prediction Division) of the University of Shizuoka, is the relationship between the appearance of deep-sea fish and earthquakes. Statistical verification of sex.It was clarified that the appearance of deep-sea fish did not necessarily lead to the occurrence of a large earthquake in the vicinity.

Examining the domestic legend that "an earthquake will occur when deep-sea fish appear" goes back to 1743, "Kokusatojindan".The research group started this research under the hypothesis that if this legend is true, the appearance of deep-sea fish can be useful information for disaster prevention.

There are several academic literatures in the past regarding the drifting and catching of deep-sea fish. However, all of these are limited in region and period. Therefore, in addition to these academic documents, information published by aquariums nationwide, and the appearance of deep-sea fish are often taken up by local newspapers, so they are published in local newspapers and local editions of national newspapers. We collected the articles and created the "Deep Sea Fish Appearance Catalog".

Based on this, we conducted a survey focusing on eight species of deep-sea fish, such as "Ryugunotsukai" and "Sakegashira," which are said to be deep-sea fish that are precursors to earthquakes. As a result, 8 cases of drifting and capture were confirmed from November 1928, 11 to March 26, 2011.Furthermore, when we investigated earthquakes of "magnitude (M) 3 or more" that occurred within a radius of 11 km from the place of appearance within 336 days after the appearance of each deep-sea fish, the case where there was an earthquake after the appearance of deep-sea fish was in 30. It was only the Niigata Chuetsu-oki Earthquake (M100) on July 6.0.

From these findings, the research group concluded that folklore such as "the appearance of deep-sea fish is a precursor to an earthquake" is considered a superstition.
