Tamagawa University Tamagawa Gakuen has started a project to build a 9-story middle-high-rise pure wooden student dormitory on the university grounds in Machida, Tokyo.

For the structures (pillars, beams, braces) on the 1st to 9th floors, the traditional construction method "wooden frame construction method" that has been developed for a long time in Japan has been introduced. It will be Japan's first 9-story wooden dormitory and will be one of the largest wooden student dormitories in Japan.Designed as a sustainable landmark for the entire area in harmony with the lush Tamagawa Gakuen campus, wood is actively used for the interior to create a warm living space that is comfortable for dormitory students.

Part of the thinned wood in the school is used for the interior material, and ceramic siding using domestic thinned wood as chips is used for the outer wall material.Aim to be an eco-friendly student dormitory that utilizes forest resources. The reason for adopting wooden construction for student dormitories is that active use of wood contributes to the global environment and society according to the "Act on Promotion of Wood Use in Public Buildings" enforced on October 2010, 10. Also, because the trees on the campus are in the renewal period, we would like to promote the effective use of logging.

The 1st to 5th floors will have a 2-hour fireproof structure, and the 6th to 9th floors will have a 1-hour fireproof structure. This is the first time in Japan that a two-hour fireproof specification for a wooden frame floor has been adopted.By combining the latest wooden structures and fireproof technologies to complete a wooden 2-story student dormitory that is cheaper and safer than conventional construction methods, it is expected to become a model case for mid-to-high-rise buildings that promote the use of wood.

Construction will begin in March 2021.In the future, we plan to hold a structure tour and a completion tour so that this initiative will be widely known.
