Azabu University will promote a research project that contributes to the investigation of the causes of infertility by elucidating the spermatogenesis process common to mammals in the reproductive cycle and the molecular mechanism of fertilization and implantation. It is expected to develop in the future as an advanced research that is unprecedented in veterinary universities.

This project is one of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's private university research branding project "Realization of a human healthy society through the creation of animal symbiotic science."At the Department of Applied Animal Science, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Azabu University, the representative is Sou Maezawa (Comparative Toxicology Laboratory) and the member is Junya Ito (Animal Reproductive Science Laboratory). Conduct research under the theme of "elucidation".

Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that support the reproductive cycle is an essential and important task in life science. This cycle in which germ cells undergo sexual differentiation, gametogenesis, and fertilization to create continuity in life is common to mammals, and there is a commonly evolved molecular mechanism.

Infertility is a social problem common to humans and animals, and the cause of infertility is 65% from females (abnormal ovulation and implantation) and 48% from males (abnormal creativity). The low conception rate is related to external factors such as the environment and internal factors such as heredity, and infertility requires elucidation of the molecular mechanism of fertilization and implantation.

In this study, we aim to improve infertility by 1) elucidating epigenome changes that function in spermatogenesis, 2) developing in vitro spermatogenesis technology, and 3) analyzing the function of zinc signals in fertilization and implantation. As a result, 1) investigation of the cause of infertility, 2) development of reproductive technology / treatment method, 3) development of new livestock breeding markers are expected.
