Research groups at Toyohashi University of Technology, the University of Tokyo, and Keio University have used "scrambled physical stimulation" in virtual reality (VR) space to clarify the difference between whole body ownership and body part ownership.
Scrambled physical stimulation is the presentation of only the observer's hands and feet and randomly rearranging them in space.Using this, the research group examined the difference between a person's sense of ownership of the "whole body" and the sense of ownership of the "body part."
In the experiment, an adult subject was asked to observe scrambled physical stimulation while moving the whole body. Then, it was compared with the stimulus when it was placed in the same arrangement as the normal body.
As a result, in scrambled physical stimulation, a feeling of possession of a body part occurred when the visual stimulation of the limbs and the movement of one's body were synchronized. In other words, I felt that even the limbs that had fallen apart in the VR space were part of my body. However, the feeling that the disjointed limbs were put together as one whole body (a feeling of whole body ownership) did not occur.
On the other hand, physical stimulation with the limbs in the same arrangement as usual resulted in both a feeling of possession of the body part and a feeling of possession of the whole body.In other words, I could feel the transparent whole body in the space between the limbs.
From this result, if the body is disassembled into pieces and randomly arranged, a feeling of ownership for each body part is generated, but a feeling of possession of the whole body does not occur, and the feeling of possession of the whole body has an appropriate spatial arrangement of the body parts. It was suggested that it was necessary.
The results of this research show that scrambled physical stimulation is effective as a method for separating the feeling of possession of the whole body and the feeling of possession of body parts, and it is possible that the physical self-consciousness of a person is influenced by the spatial arrangement of a normal person's body. It can be said that it shows.
