Tohoku University has launched a new academic field "Integrated Understanding of Brain Systems that Emergence of Diverse Individualities" (abbreviation: "Emergence Brain of Individuality") represented by Professor Noriko Osumi of the Graduate School of Medicine.Elucidate the diversity of brain and nervous system development and understand how individuality is born.
According to Tohoku University, the emergent brain of "individuality" was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for the 2016 Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research in New Academic Areas. It corresponds to research in multiple fields, and the research assistance period is planned to be 2016 years from FY5.
Research subjects range from human foets to adults.Researchers in various fields will work together to scientifically understand individuality and elucidate the mechanism by which individuality is expressed.Furthermore, using rodents with a more uniform genetic background than humans, we will investigate the effects of environmental changes in germ cell formation and development processes on animal brain activity and behavioral patterns. The results will be compared with those other than model animals to comprehensively study the expression of individuality.
For this reason, we will promote the development of analysis systems and analysis equipment necessary for research promotion in terms of technology, the construction of mathematical models, and the construction of an international data sharing platform. In addition, we will sort out ethical issues related to individuality research and disseminate them to society.
