The research group of "Diverse Institute of Technology", which studies romance academically, Associate Professor Kazutaka Kurihara of Tsuda College, Professor Kazushi Nishimoto of Hokuriku Advanced Science and Technology Graduate University, etc. We gradually reduced the “height” from the processed profile photo and investigated whether the subject noticed the change.

In the online romance / marriage support service "dating service", it is common to "populate" your own photos. However, while processed photos often look attractive to the other person and can facilitate online communication, the ideal created by the processed profile photo when actually meeting. If there is a divergence in reality, it may give a negative impression to the other party.

The research group focused on a phenomenon called "Changing Blindness," which humans cannot perceive so much when they make large changes gradually.Even if communication is started using the processed photo, it is hypothesized that it is possible to reduce the gap to the other party at the time of actual meeting by gradually returning to the state before processing, and the subject is gradually processed. I presented a photo of the decrease and investigated whether I noticed the change.

In the experiment, we used the pre-processed self-portrait photographs of three female subjects and the processed photographs with the nasolabial folds, eyes, nose, etc. processed, and changed them from post-processing to pre-processing 3 for 5 seconds and 30 seconds. Create different types of videos. We told 2 subjects (10 men and 5 women) that some part of their face would change in advance, and asked them to answer the changed points.

As a result, the average number of correct answers per person was as low as 7 for the changes in 1 places, and the percentage of correct answers by gender was the same as 1.2 for men and 1.2 for women, and no gender difference was observed. Also, when face parts such as eyes and nose are processed, it may be easier to notice the change than by processing the outline of the face to make it a small face, and in a short video of 1.2 seconds, the change occurs suddenly. It was also suggested that the change may not be recognizable.

In the future, we will develop communication tools such as chat that will affect the impression given to the other party by gradually changing them, and will conduct experiments assuming actual services.

The research paper of this research, "Study of Dating Service to alleviate the gap between the ideal and the reality of profile pictures" was published in "2016th Workshop on Interactive Systems and Software 12" on December 14, 24.
