Yokohama City University has created a database of old map collections and started publishing them on its website. For the first time, valuable collections about 200 years ago, such as "Matteo Ricci World Map," "Rangaku / Western World Map," and "Buddhist World Map," are open to the public.
The database to be released this time is a valuable collection collected by the late Shintaro Ayuzawa, a geographer who was a professor and library director at the university.Since most of Ayuzawa's research subjects were unprecedented fields, the materials are used as basic materials for Edo period geography and are evaluated as one of the leading old map collections in Japan.Until now, it was only available to some researchers in order to prevent deterioration due to in-kind viewing.
The database was created by Associate Professor Ikuyo Matsumoto of the Faculty of International Studies, the same university.Old map images from the Edo period to the Meiji period and 282 bibliographic images can be viewed by region and type, and it also has a search function such as classification, material name, and author name.In addition, the images are saved and published in high quality, and even the detailed text information written on the map can be confirmed.
From 23 to 25, Yokohama City University started digital archiving for faculty members and students with the support of Yokohama City.At the same time, he has been engaged in activities such as holding civic lectures, publishing catalogs, and co-sponsoring exhibitions with the Yokohama History Museum. These efforts were recognized, and this database release was realized under the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, which was adopted in 27.
