A research group led by Masahiro Miyake, a specific lecturer at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, analyzed all domestic data on medical fee billing information (receipt) and found that a special retinal detachment called central serous chorioretinal disease occurs 10 times a year. It was revealed that 34 cases per million people have been affected.

According to Kyoto University, central serous chorioretinal disease is a disease in which retinal detachment occurs in the macula, which is the central part for seeing things, and there are acute types that recover spontaneously and chronic types that repeat recurrence. The chronic form shows symptoms similar to age-related macular degeneration, which is one of the major causes of blindness in developed countries, and has been found to cause serious visual loss in long-term observation.

The research group analyzed the receipt data and identified a tendency for new onset central serous chorioretinal disease between January 2011 and December 1.The annual incidence per 2018 population was 12, of which 10% were male. The peak onset is 34-75.9 years for men and 40-44 years for females. It was also found that females are a little older and more likely to develop the disease.

This study is the world's largest epidemiological study of central serous chorioretinal disease. The receipt data for all citizens is limited to Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, and it is likely to attract attention as an example of effective utilization of a huge amount of receipt data.
