Associate Professor Yohei Okada of Kio University conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in collaboration with researchers all over Japan, and long-term physiotherapy for patients with Parkinson's disease in the early to middle stages of the disease improved motor symptoms and prevented them. For the first time, we have shown evidence that it has the effect of reducing the dose of PD.

It is widely recognized that it is important to recognize the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) from the early stage of the disease and to continue rehabilitation such as anti-PD drugs and physical therapy for the motor symptoms from the early stage. Evidence regarding the effectiveness of physiotherapy during the period was unclear.

The research group searched multiple databases (Pubmed, Cochrane Central, PEDro, CINAHL) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of physiotherapy on PD patients published by August 2020.As a result of rigorous screening of the identified 8 studies in pairs, physiotherapy for 2940 months or more was performed for PD patients in the early to middle stage of the disease (Yar classification 1-3), and motor symptoms, activities of daily living, and Ten RCTs were identified verifying their effect on the dose of anti-PD drug.

A meta-analysis was conducted by extracting the results of exercise symptoms in the on-stage and poor off-stage of the drug efficacy, activities of daily living, and the amount of anti-PD drug taken. As a result, it was clarified that long-term physical therapy has the effect of improving motor symptoms during the off-season and reducing the amount of anti-PD drug taken.

Patients with PD often have exacerbation of motor symptoms during the continuation of drug therapy, and if the amount of anti-PD taken for a long period of time increases, the risk of side effects increases, and there is a possibility that medical expenses will increase for society. Therefore, it is said that the decrease in the amount of anti-PD oral administration due to long-term physical therapy has great significance for PD patients, their families, and society.
