The lack of modern observational data is a problem when examining "space weather" and solar activity such as solar flares and solar storms. The start of sunspot observations with a telescope was in the early 17th century, and can only be traced back to about 400 years at the longest. Therefore, a research group at Kyoto University investigated the aurora and sunspot records recorded in the official history of China.

Astronomical records in China are past astronomical records because the "astronomical observer" at that time was in charge of recording for a long time, so the standard of recording is constant to some extent and the location information of the observation point is clear. It can be said that it is the best material for the survey. This time, the research group extracted descriptions containing keywords meaning aurora and sunspots from "History of Yuan" and "History of Ming", and predicted from the viewpoint of natural science, collation with Russian chronology and observation records by telescopes in Europe. We examined the solar activity from the 13th century to the 17th century by comparing it with the situation of the solar activity at that time. From "History of Yuan", we found 20 descriptions that are considered to be aurora, and from "Ming History", we found 10 aurora and 26 descriptions that are considered to be sunspots, and this result is consistent with the long-term tendency of solar activity restored from annual rings. I was able to confirm that.

This research group has conducted surveys on Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Song, and Masafumi Qing, and this research provided long-term observation data from Sui to Qing for nearly 1400 years. It will be.In the future, it is said that it will proceed with research on records in other regions at the same time, and will further approach past solar activity.
