Juntendo University School of Medicine Human Pathology Course (Department of Pathological Diagnosis, Juntendo University Nerima Hospital) Senior Associate Professor Kanako Ogura and Assistant Professor Shiori Hochi are the first attempt at a medical school in STEAM education*, which fosters the ability to find and solve problems. MEdit Lab (Juntendo University STEAM Education Research Group)" was established within Juntendo University, and a dedicated site was opened.

In August 2020, Senior Associate Professor Ogura cooperated with the Editorial Engineering Research Institute for the STEAM library project for the realization of "STEAM learning" publicly offered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Proposed interdisciplinary educational content "Talking pathologist's MEdit Lab - reading the world with medicine x editing edit".It was the only one selected in the medical field, and the content proposed in March 8 was released to the public.

In 2021, it was selected for the same project for the second year in a row, and the content was expanded.“MEdit Lab (Juntendo University STEAM Education Study Group)” was launched with the aim of promoting the construction of a place for STEAM education and research activities by utilizing the video teaching materials that have been produced so far.

At MEdit Lab, we hold seminars using video teaching materials "Talking Pathologist's MEdit Lab" developed by members of the study group, distribute various information through a dedicated site, etc. We will build a place to share medicine and medical information.

MEdit Lab has the following five concepts.
(XNUMX) Community for learning medicine and medical care
Creating a community where middle and high school students, university students, parents, teachers, and doctors who are interested in medicine and medical care gather
(XNUMX) Dissemination site of “liberal arts medicine”
Dissemination of new medical education by combining other genres such as teaching materials learned in junior high school and high school
③MEdit Lab Research Institute for Teaching Material Development
Development of medical teaching materials that bring together the interests and needs of junior and senior high school students and teachers
④Long-term learning opportunities through high school-university-industry collaboration
Creation of a place for learning that continues long, broadly and deeply across organizations, specialties, ages, and occupations
⑤A learning laboratory that transforms chance into necessity
A place for experiments that turns various coincidences and opportunities into learning engines

Senior Associate Professor Ogura says, "Perhaps because there is too strong an awareness that medicine is a highly specialized field to be learned in medical schools, there are almost no attempts to deal with medicine in secondary education. However, the way medical care is also the foundation. The future vision of medicine will also change along with changes in society. In the coming era, we will observe, evaluate, and transform medicine and medical care from diverse perspectives such as history and culture. In particular, medical professionals, including doctors, need to stand by sick people with diverse values. Understanding society and culture is also essential," he said, explaining the need for a place to learn medicine and medical care from a STEAM perspective.

*"STEAM" is a coined word that takes the initials of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art(s), and Mathematics. It refers to interdisciplinary inquiry learning that fosters the ability to find and solve problems and emphasizes collaboration. In "Talking Pathologist's MEdit Lab", the M stands for Medicine, not Mathematics.
