The research group of Tohoku University, Hachinohe National College of Technology, and the International Rescue System Research Organization has succeeded in developing the world's first prototype of a "flying fire extinguishing robot" that floats in the air and directly extinguishes a fire source.

Extinguishing a fire at a fire site is harsh and poses a great risk to the firefighters engaged in the work.Especially for large-scale fires, it is difficult for firefighters to extinguish the fire inside the building, and the only way to prevent the spread of fire is to discharge a large amount of water from a distance.

Therefore, the research group devised a robot "Dragon Fire Fighter" that floats a hose using the thrust of water jet and flies in the sky to extinguish the fire directly to the fire source. The total length is about 3m, and two nozzle modules and a camera and a thermal camera for checking the situation are installed at the tip.By controlling the injection nozzle connected to the fire hose, it can ascend stably, enter while selecting the flight direction, and discharge water directly to the fire source. In an experiment conducted using a fire extinguishing robot, it was possible to invade the building through a window while switching directions and extinguish the flame inside the drum tube in about 2 minute.

It is expected that this result will make it easier to extinguish the fire source in the building, so that the fire extinguishing will be made faster and more efficient, the amount of water will be reduced to minimize the inundation, and the risk associated with the fire extinguishing activity in the building will be reduced. In the future, we will proceed with research aimed at practical application such as downsizing the nozzle module and imparting fire resistance, and plan to confirm its practicality within three years in an environment close to an actual combustion building. The results of this research will be announced at the Tokyo International Fire and Disaster Prevention Exhibition held from May 3st to June 2018rd, 5.
