The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has decided to provide approximately 2 million yen in support from the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research project for a comprehensive survey of the southern Turkey earthquake that occurred in February and killed more than 5 people.Thirty-three people from 4,200 institutions, including the University of Tokyo, will cooperate with the Turkish government to understand the extent of the damage, clarify the mechanism of earthquake occurrence, and investigate how information should be disseminated.

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the survey will be led by Professor Koichi Kusunoki of the University of Tokyo Earthquake Research Institute, and the University of Tokyo, Hokkaido University, Tohoku University, Tsukuba University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kogakuin University, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, and Hyogo Prefectural University. , Tottori University, Kagawa University, Ehime University, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.

There are five research themes. The first is ``Understanding crustal deformation and disasters by satellite geodesy, etc.,'' which uses high-resolution images from the Earth observation satellite DAICHI-5 to estimate crustal deformation and grasp disasters. The second is "Elucidation of the earthquake generation mechanism."Clarifying the process of generating a series of seismic activities.

The third is "Investigation of disaster generation mechanism by strong motion observation".Temporary observations will be carried out while aftershock activity is active, and we will elucidate the occurrence of earthquake damage and the mechanism that caused large shaking in a vast area. The fourth is ``Elucidation of structural damage through disaster investigations,'' which investigates the causes of collapsed buildings over an extremely wide area.

The fifth is "Clarification of large-scale wide-area earthquake disaster management and risk communication."We will examine how to disseminate information and disaster prevention education from various angles, and develop activities to create disaster-resilient communities.
