An international research team in which Ryukyu University participates conducted a genome analysis of 26 human bones excavated from the Jomon period ruins of the Japanese archipelago and Southeast Asia, and elucidated the origin and past diffusion process of people living in Southeast Asia today. This international research team is an ancient genome research team led by the University of Copenhagen, from Japanese archaeologists, anthropologists, genetic anthropologists, and genomic researchers, including the Department of Human Anatomy, Graduate School of Medicine, Ryukyu University. A research group is participating.

The Jomon human bone whose genome was deciphered this time is a female human bone from the late Jomon period about 2 years ago, which was excavated from the Ikawazu Shell Mound site in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture. It was the first published in the world to decipher the entire Jomon genome sequence.Based on the entire genome sequence of this Jomon human bone, we conducted a comparative analysis of the genomes of more than 500 human populations such as modern East Asians, Southeast Asians, Southeast Asians 1 to 8 years ago, and human populations around the world. bottom. As a result, it was found that the genomes of the ancient human bones of hunter-gatherers who were in Laos about 2 years ago and the genome of a female who was in the Japanese archipelago about 80 years ago are very similar.

This time, it was found that the Japanese archipelago have a deep genetic connection with the people of the southern part of the continent from the Jomon period to the present day. This is the first scientifically proven study by cross-check analysis by multiple independent international research institutes. These findings will not only be used in the future to elucidate the origins of people of each era who lived in the Japanese archipelago, but will also make a great contribution to research on the origin and diffusion of human populations in East and Southeast Asia. Be expected. The research results were published in the international academic journal "Science".
